Comment
The mintage of this great coin seems to have served several purposes:- Celebrating Frederik 2.s wedding with Sofie of Mecklenburg
- Salaries for mercenaries after the Seven Years War
- Commemorative Coin after the war. This is suggested by numismatist Julius Wilcke. In support of this idea may be argued that the Danish weapons for the first time shows the three crowns. This because one of the war aims had been the restoration of the Kalmar Union.
- Introduction of a currency reform
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Speciedaler - Frederik II 1572 coin from Denmark is that it features an error in the inscription on the reverse side. The coin was minted with a mistake in the Latin text, which reads "FREDERICUS II DEI GRATIA" instead of the correct "FREDERICUS II DEI GRATIA KING" (King in Latin is "Rex"). This error makes the coin particularly rare and valuable among collectors.
