The Ottawa mint opened in 1908 and produced gold Sovereigns under request from the Royal Mint, London, using gold mined in British Columbia and the Yukon. Coins made at this mint bear the letter C for Canada but production was limited; by the time the mint ceased production of Sovereigns in 1919, there had been only 628,150 struck, mostly for export purposes. The standard weight of a sovereign was 160/623 troy ounce (123.3 grains). The pure gold content was 113 1/623 grains (7.3224 g).
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1908-1910 Edward VII Ottawa Mint Sovereign is that it was minted during a time of great change in the British Empire. King Edward VII, who ruled from 1901 until his death in 1910, was the first British monarch to visit India, and his reign saw the expansion of the British Empire to its greatest extent. The coin's mintage was also a significant event in the history of the Ottawa Mint, as it marked the beginning of the mint's production of gold sovereigns, which would continue until 1932.
