LC-2A1 Stem of lower left rosebud is nearly straight with a leaf hanging from short stem
LC-2A2 Lower left rosebud curves upward with a leaf with no stem
LC-2A3 The bow on the bouquet is doubled
LC-2A4 The stem of the lower left rosebud is broken
LC-2A5 The stem of the lower left rosebud does not connect directly to the bouquet
LC-2A6 The stem of the lower left rosebud originates from a leaf, large ampersand

In 1836, the Bank of Montreal was permitted to issue sous inscribed with its name. The engravers, in their ignorance of the French language, cut the value to read UN SOUS (plural). The misspelling was not a hinderance to their circulation but an easy means of determination when numerous imitations were later imported.

The LC-2 series, without BANK OF MONTREAL, was possibly issued without government approval.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Token 1 Sous (Bank of Montreal - "Bank TOKEN") ND (1835) from Lower Canada (Canadian provinces) made of Copper weighing 8.5 g is that it was used as a form of currency in the Canadian provinces during a time when there was a shortage of official currency. This coin was issued by the Bank of Montreal and was accepted as legal tender, despite not being officially sanctioned by the government. It is a unique piece of Canadian numismatic history and a testament to the resourcefulness of the people during a time of economic hardship.
