Comment

VICTORY OF MAINZ(1793)Mainz had been invested by General Custine on October 21, 1792 and he found himself besieged there by the Prussians from April 6, 1793. The French did not surrender until July 22, 1793. Most of the 5 sols coins were overstruck, among others on monnerons of 2 floors. For the 2-floor room, there are two models, one of which has a thicker crown of oak on the right (Dr.72b). The troops who capitulated in Mainz will be sent to Vendée where they will eventually be annihilated. General Custine who had commanded the place during the siege will be guillotined for treason.

Interesting fact

The Siege of Mainz, which took place in 1793, was a significant event in the history of the City of Mainz and the surrounding region. During this time, the city was besieged by French revolutionary forces, led by General Louis Alexandre François P cache, who were seeking to capture the city and its strategic location along the Rhine River. The siege lasted for several months, and the city was eventually captured by the French in July of that year. The coin , the 1 Sol - Frederick Charles Joseph (Siege of Mainz) 1793, was likely minted during this time period, and its design may have been influenced by the political and military events that were taking place in the region. The coin's obverse features an image of Frederick Charles Joseph, who was the Elector of Mainz at the time, while the reverse features an image of the city's coat of arms. The coin's mintage and distribution may have been intended to help finance the military efforts of the French revolutionary forces, or to commemorate the siege and its outcome.
