Comment

Benjamin and James Caffin were tailors and drapers. Joseph Redman was a wine merchant and Willim Halsted, a draper. The Shipham family, although they subsequently changed their name to Shippam, continued in the food business and eventually became big in the manufacture of meat and fish pastes. The firm remained in family hands until the 1980s.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Token 1 Shilling (Sussex - Chichester / Accommodation) 1811 from United Kingdom is that it was issued during a time when there was a shortage of official currency in circulation, particularly in rural areas. As a result, private token issuers, such as innkeepers and merchants, began to issue their own coins, like this one, to fill the gap. These tokens were often made of silver or copper and had a standardized design, making them easily recognizable and trustworthy. This particular coin is a rare example of a privately issued token that has survived to this day, providing a unique glimpse into the economic and social history of the time.
