Interesting fact
Did you know that the Pattern 1 Sen coin was designed by a British engraver named Charles Leech? Leech was a renowned engraver who had worked for the Royal Mint in London before being invited to Japan to help design the country's new currency. His design for the Pattern 1 Sen coin featured a vertical reeded sun on the obverse (front) side, which was a departure from the traditional Japanese coinage design that featured a square hole in the center. This unique design element was meant to symbolize the modernization and westernization of Japan during the Meiji period.
