Comment

Many different varieties in the designs exist, including different castle shapes, different key rings, different crosses above the keys, different symbols separating the legends, and different heights of the dates' placements. If there is a design element, there is probably some sort of variety to it.

While the exact details of the castles may vary, there were four basic shapes used throughout the years:

Coins minted in 1565 have the date on the obverse, separated by the castle; all other years have the dates on the reverse, separated by the crossed keys. The coins without a date are often given the full date-range of the schillings (1563-1579); however, the obverse castle is of the second type, placing their date range from 1565 to 1569.

The exact lettering of the surrounding legend may vary.

Interesting fact

The 1 Schilling (Type 2) coin from the Free City of Riga (Livonian Confederation) has an interesting feature. Despite being made of Billon, a silver-copper alloy with only 0.094 silver content, it weighs 0.98 grams, which is relatively heavy for a coin of its size and composition.
