DH#8.26 Edo mintInteresting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Ryō "Man'en Koban" coin is that it was minted during a time of significant change in Japan. The coin was introduced in 1860, just a few years after the country had opened up to the rest of the world following a period of isolation known as sakoku. This period saw significant modernization and westernization in Japan, and the introduction of new currency systems was part of this process. The 1 Ryō coin was one of the first coins to be introduced in the new system, and it was designed to replace the traditional Japanese monetary system based on silver and copper coins.
