Comment

The story behind this (as far as is known, unique) coin is unclear but is thought to be have been struck by a mint employee as a piece to remember the transition from the high purity alloy used traditionally (917 silver) to the Quaternary Alloy (500 fine - half silver). Issued in proof, identical to other coins struck that year in type otherwise.  Struck in 92.5% fine (Sterling) Ag. No Mint mark, thus a Kolkata Coin. Coin itself has very deep cameo and frosting.
