Date of issue: 31 JAN 2003

The stone sculpture of the sphinx found during the excavations in the Thebes, the capital of the ancient Egypt, had been installed on granite pier of the Neva River Embankment, by the building of the Saint Petersburg Art Academy, in 1834.

Interesting fact

The Sphinx on the coin is depicted with a winged lion's body and a human head, which is a common representation of the creature in Russian art and literature. In Russian culture, the Sphinx is often associated with wisdom, strength, and protection, and is said to guard the entrance to the Academy of Arts building in St. Petersburg, where the coin's design is based.
