Interesting fact
The 1½ Réis coin was a significant denomination during the reign of King João IV (1640-1656) in Portugal, and it was the first coin to feature the king's portrait. The coin's design was inspired by the Roman Catholic Church, with the king's image on one side and the image of the Virgin Mary on the other. This coin was also the first to use the Portuguese coat of arms, which featured a shield with five quinas (a symbol of the five wounds of Christ) and a crown. The 1½ Réis coin was widely used in trade and commerce during its time and remains a valuable collector's item today.
