The 1993 coin (printed date hijra year 1414, ١٤١٤- ١٩٩٣). This date is from three years after Yemeni unification in 1990, at which point the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) and People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) both ceased to exist. Thus, no Y.A.R. coin from 1993 exists; there is instead a 1993-issued Republic of Yemen 1 rial coin, and this is already listed on Numista under the country heading "Yemen". It is 19.95 mm instead of 28 mm, and the Arabic inscription on the banner on reverse is different from the earlier YAR coin of the same denomination.Source: Currency in Yemen Through the Ages, Central Bank of Yemen, Sana'a, 2004, pp. 260-261.
Interesting fact
The 1 Rial coin from North Yemen, which was in circulation from 1976 to 1985, features a unique design on its reverse side. It depicts a traditional Yemeni dhow, a type of sailing boat that has been used for centuries in the region's coastal waters. The dhow is shown sailing through the waters with its sails unfurled, surrounded by a circle of waves. This design not only adds a touch of cultural flair to the coin but also serves as a symbol of Yemen's rich maritime history and its connection to the sea.
