Comment

Mintage of this coin (and other gold coins of the same period) is strictly related to the Thirty Years War, in which Denmark was involved. Coins of 1627 and 1628 were used for paying Danish troops, while the ones dated 1632 were necessary to maintain a standing army in Denmark, even if a peace treaty was signed in 1629.

All coins have the same mint mark, a clover. However, two main types can be distinguished:
  • coins dated 1625, 1627, and 1628, made by mintmaster Nicolaus Schwabe
  • coins dated 1632, made by mintmaster Peter Gruyner.
On the coins by Nicolaus Schwabe, the cross has garlands and straight ends and the shield is unbroken at the top, below the crown. Further differences can be seen in the obverse portrait.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1 Rhinsk Guilder - Christian IV 1625-1632 from Denmark is that it was minted during a time of economic and political change in Denmark. Christian IV, who ruled from 1588 to 1648, implemented a number of reforms aimed at strengthening the Danish economy and increasing trade with other European countries. The introduction of the Rhinsk Guilder, which was based on the Rhine gulden, a popular currency in the region, was part of these efforts. The coin was used widely in Denmark and its territories, including Norway and the Duchy of Holstein, and it remained in circulation until the 19th century. Despite its age, the coin remains a popular collector's item today, with many examples still in existence and highly sought after by numismatists.
