Republic countermarked Real ND (1866-1869) F15 NGC, KM-B2, Janson-3, Pratt-MR2. A quarter section of a Bolivia Republic 4 Soles counterstamped with raised "1" punch on hexagonal field with horizontal lines. Base coin Fine, countermark good Fine thus in typical condition for this very scarce necessity issue.During the War of the Triple Alliance (1865 - 1870) coins were cut into 2, 4 and 8 pieces by civilians acting as purveyors for the Allied Armies. They cut them with different edges: dented, smooth, or wavy, according to the kind of instrument used: others were countermarked with their punches, with letters or numbers.
The use of cut coins was abolished throughout the Republic by a Decree dated February 24, 1872.
