Comment
Dimensions vary slightly between the original 1961-4 issues and the later 1965-83 strikes.Prooflike strikes exist for most years but these are very hard to distinguish from the Proofs.
Matt finish coins were produced for export.
Huge numbers have been smelted and availability of specimens is becoming scarce.

The fineness is the same as that for the 1/2 Pound, 1/2 Pond, & 1/2 Sovereign - 22 Carat fine Gold.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Rand Gold coin (1st and 2nd decimal series) from South Africa is that it was minted with a unique gold composition of .917, which is higher than the standard .900 gold used in many other coins. This means that the coin contains a higher percentage of pure gold, making it a valuable and sought-after collector's item.
