Interesting fact
The Token 1 Quarto coin was issued during a time when there was a shortage of official currency in Gibraltar, and local merchants and traders began issuing their own tokens to facilitate trade. James Spittle, a local merchant, issued a series of copper tokens, including the 1 Quarto coin, which was worth one-fourth of a Gibraltar pound. Despite being issued by a private individual, the Token 1 Quarto coin was widely accepted and used in the territory. Today, it is a rare and sought-after collector's item, with some examples selling for thousands of dollars.
