The Eric Sewell heraldic emblem of the United Kingdom reverse was originally introduced in 1983 with the Arnold Machin second portrait on the obverse. This issue was struck as part of a set of 14 different £1 designs with selected gold plating to the reverse (2,005 sales), issued to mark the twenty fifth anniversary of the first issue of the UK one pound coin in 1983 with an issue limit of 3,000 for the complete set.
