The design was originally issued in 1987 with the 3rd portrait by Raphael David Maklouf, this issue was struck as part of a set of 14 different £1 designs with selected gold plating to the reverse (2,005 sales), issued to mark the twenty fifth anniversary of the first issue of the UK one pound coin in 1983 with an issue limit of 3,000 for the complete set.
