The Norman Sillman heraldic emblem of the 'Celtic Cross' reverse was originally introduced in 1996 with the Maklouf third portrait on the obverse.

The coin was issued individually (overall Issue Limit: 25,000) while the design was also struck in nickel brass and silver proof piedfort. A reverse frosted silver proof was also issued.

Sp#16 Regular Proof: Released individually with an issue limit of 23,000.

Sp#16A Reverse Frosted Proof: Released individually with an issue limit of 2,000.



A third edition with selective gold plating was issued in 2008 to celebrate 25 years of the pound coin.
