Boer War siege issue:The 1902 gold Veldpond, also known as the 'Pilgrims Rest Coin', is a remarkable coin struck by the Boers on the run from the overwhelming British forces on a makeshift mint set up in the veld (long grass) in the remote region of Pilgrims Rest in the north eastern Transvaal (now known as Mpumalanga). For many numismatists the Veld Pond is the holy grail of South African coins because of its remarkable history.
Weight varies between 7.73g and 8.51g, mid-range value has been quoted.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1902 Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek Veld Pond coin is that it was designed by renowned British artist and engraver, George William de Saulles. De Saulles was known for his work on various coins and medals, including the famous 1901 Edward VII penny. The Veld Pond coin features a portrait of President Paul Kruger on the obverse and a springbok antelope on the reverse, which was a symbol of the South African Republic. The coin was minted in gold (.999) and weighs 8.12 grams. It is considered a rare and valuable collector's item, with some mint-condition coins selling for thousands of dollars.
