Cosimo I de' Medici became Duke of the Republic of Florence in 1537 until 1557, then Duke of Florence and Siena from 1557-1569. In 1569, Pope Pius V raised Cosimo to Grand Duke of Tuscany. Earlier dies of the Cosimo I piastra carry his original title:
