From 1890 onwards, Germany used the "big eagle" for its coins. The present type is a deliberate exception to better differentiate it from the 5 pfennig.Monetary workshops:
A = Berlin
D = München
E = Muldenhütten
F = Stuttgart
G = Karlsruhe
J = Hamburg
The vintages 1916 A, 1916 F, 1918 A and 1918 F are very rare and can be considered as trials. Trials from the Stuttgart workshop were found in the ruins following the fire that destroyed the building in 1944.
The BE parts for the years 1917 A, 1917 G and 1917 J probably do not exist. They are mentioned in the SCWC, but not in any of the specialist catalogs (Schön, Jaeger, Neumann, AKS).
Coins without different workshops are not variants, but are to be considered as varieties and result from weak minting.
