This token also circulated as Duits in the Netherlands around 1820. They were imported because of a shortage of small denominations.This token is known in the Netherlands as Bleyensteinse Duit, after the shopkeeper Bleyenstein who gave them as change but refused to accept these tokens as payments. A furious crowd plundered his house in protest. The tokens soon disappeared after new Half Cent & Cent coins became available in sufficient quantities.
