B L G = Bremer Lagerhaus Geselschaft

Bremer Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft

65 Merchants founded the stock corporation in February 1877. A key factor was the desire of Bremen cotton traders for an improved storage and trading infrastructure, including the ability to issue order warehouse receipts and warrants. The business was limited to handling and storage; the transport of goods was not one of them.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1 Pfennig coin from Bremen is that it was made of iron, which was a unusual choice of material for coins at the time. Most coins were made of copper, silver, or gold, but the use of iron was seen as a way to reduce the cost of production and make the coin more accessible to the general population. Despite being made of a less valuable material, the coin was still designed with care and features a detailed image of the Bremen city coat of arms on one side and the denomination on the other. This coin is a unique example of how currency can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, even when made with humble materials.
