In 1875 Abraham (Aka Adolf)and Ida Wertheim opened a small retail store in Eastern Germany. In the ensuing years their stores grew into a department store empire.
Interesting fact
The 1 Pfennig coin was part of the German Empire's coinage system from 1871 to 1918, and it was minted in several cities, including Berlin. The coin's design features the imperial eagle on one side and the value and mintmark on the other. The mintmark "A" on this particular coin indicates that it was minted in Berlin. It's worth noting that the coin's composition of zinc was a common practice during this time period, as it was a more affordable and durable material than other metals. However, the use of zinc in coinage has largely been discontinued in modern times due to its tendency to corrode and degrade over time.
