Interesting fact
The Pattern 1 Peso coin was designed by Mexican artist and engraver, José de la Vega, and features a portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a leader of the Mexican War of Independence. The coin was minted in 1980 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Hidalgo's famous "Grito de Dolores," a speech in which he called for independence from Spain. The coin's design was meant to symbolize the struggle for independence and the unity of the Mexican people.
