Comment

After Rafael Carrera's death, all coins with his portrait and coat of arms were to be destroyed because of popular rejection to the deceased dictator. But with the mint having trouble to provide new coins on August 10 1894, the government authorized their counter-stamping at the mint, with official 1/2 Real of 1894, to legitimize their circulation by placing the new coat of arms over the old one and Justice on top of Carrera's face.

All dates are from host coins. All were stamped in 1894.

Host coin: Guatemala 1 Peso 1869
Stamp dies: Guatemala ½Real 1894

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1894 Guatemalan 1 Peso coin is that it was counterstamped with the letters "G" and "H" on either side of the coat of arms, indicating that it was issued by the government of Guatemala during a period of political instability and economic turmoil in the late 19th century.
