Comment

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes (1819-1874) was a Cuban lawyer and landowner who started the first of the three independence wars in Cuba (known as "Guerra Grande" ("Big War") or "Guerra de los Diez Años" ("Ten Years War"). On 1868 he freed his slaves and invited them to join him to fight for Cuban Independence; is known as "Grito de Yara" ("Yara Cry").

Yara is a small town placed on south east of Cuba, where on 1512 Hatuey, a Taino chief was burnt in the stake for rebelling against Spanish domination; is considered as Cuba's First National Hero.

Templates used for the dies were produced in Spain.

Interesting fact

The Pattern 1 Peso (Carlos Manuel de Céspedes; Pattern) 1977 from Cuba made of Copper is a rare and unique coin that was never put into circulation. It was created as a pattern coin, meaning it was produced as a prototype or sample for a potential new design, but it was ultimately not adopted for use. As a result, only a limited number of these coins were minted, making them highly sought after by collectors.
