In 1937-1947 there were no banknotes nominated in Dominican pesos. US dollars were in circulation (since 1905), and local coins were circulating at par with US coins like in Panama and Ecuador in our days. The coins had weights, diameters, and composition identical to those of US coins of that period.Silver coins of the Dominican Republic were not officially demonetized, but they disappeared from circulation already in the 1970s because of inflation.
Only the 1939 issue was minted at the Philadelphia Mint.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1939-1952 Dominican Republic 1 Peso coin is that it was minted during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the country from 1930 until his assassination in 1961. Trujillo's regime was marked by authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights abuses, and the coin's production during this time period reflects the economic and political policies of the regime.
