Due to the "Liberal Revolution" of 1871, Guatemala removed itself from the Latin Monetary Union. Real coinage was reintroduced and the Guatemalan Peso was defined as 25.4 grams of .900 silver.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1872-1873 Guatemalan 1 Peso coin is that it was one of the first coins to feature the image of a indigenous person. The coin features a portrait of a Mayan woman on one side, which was a departure from the traditional depiction of European monarchs or other colonial figures on coins. This design choice was a nod to the rich cultural heritage of Guatemala and the importance of the indigenous population in the country's history.
