Comment
Although denominated in Pesos, this coin was issued after the Salvadoran currency was officially renamed the Colón. Most of these coins sat in bank vaults until they were demonetized and melted in 1919.
All coins bear the C.A.M. mint mark. However, they were minted in different countries:
KM#115.1 - Central American Mint and Monnaie Royale de Belgique. Of the coins dated 1904, 400,000 were minted by the Royal Belgian Mint.
KM#115.2 - U.S. Mints - Heavier portrait, wider right shoulder. For the 1914 issue, 510,993 were minted in Philadelphia and 511,108 in San Francisco.
Due to the 1914 German invasion of Belgium, the 1914 Belgian issue was seized by the German military and remelted that year.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Peso 1892-1914 coin from El Salvador is that it was one of the first coins to feature the country's national emblem, the coat of arms of El Salvador, which was adopted in 1824. The coat of arms features a shield with five volcanoes, representing the five countries of Central America, and a rising sun, symbolizing the hope for a brighter future. This coin was minted during a time of great change and political upheaval in El Salvador, and the inclusion of the national emblem on the coin reflects the country's growing sense of national identity and pride.
