Comment
With a modified head of Queen Victoria in comparison to other version of this coin, this piece is listed with Obverse 1 and the piece identified as Hern#C2 is listed with Obverse 2. Both pieces are listed as the same reverse die, Reverse 2.
Struck by Messrs. Otto Nolte and Co., Berlin, these pieces can most easily be described as salesman samples, tendered to solicit business. It is doubtful whether they were actually struck in the year dated on the coin.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern 1 Penny - Victoria (Cape of Good Hope; Thick Flan) 1889 from Cape of Good Hope (South Africa (pre-Union)) is that it features a unique design element known as the "thick flan" or "thick rim." This feature refers to the coin's rim, which is noticeably thicker than that of other coins of the same era. The thick flan was a deliberate design choice made by the mint to prevent the coin's rim from wearing down too quickly, as was a common problem with coins of the time. This feature makes the coin easily identifiable and highly sought after by collectors.
