Comment
Struck by Messrs. Otto Nolte and Co., Berlin, these pieces can most easily be described as salesman samples, tendered to solicit business. It is doubtful whether they were actually struck in the year dated on the coin. (previously KM# Pn16)Interesting fact
The Orange Free State 1888 Pattern 1 Penny coin was designed by the renowned British artist and engraver, George William de Saulles. De Saulles was known for his work on various coins and medals, including the famous Krugerrand gold coin. The Pattern 1 Penny coin features a portrait of President Johannes Brand of the Orange Free State on the obverse, and a sprig of orange blossom on the reverse. The use of aluminum in the coin's minting process was a notable innovation at the time, as it was a relatively new material in the field of coinage.
