Comment

Struck by Messrs. Otto Nolte and Co., Berlin, these pieces can most easily be described as salesman samples, tendered to solicit business. It is doubtful whether they were actually struck in the year dated on the coin.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Pattern 1 Penny (Orange Free State) 1888 from Orange Free State (South Africa (pre-Union)) made of Nickel plated weighing 9.1g is that it features a unique design that was never adopted for circulation. The coin was part of a series of pattern coins produced in 1888 to test different designs and materials for the eventual introduction of a new coinage system in the Orange Free State. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of a young Queen Victoria, while the reverse features a sprig of orange blossom, which gives the coin its name. The use of nickel plating was also an experiment, as most coins of the time were made of copper or silver. This coin is now highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity and historical significance.
