Comment

'Sans Changer' (Without Change) is the motto of the Earls of Derby. This coin was minted to recognize James Stanley (10th Earl of Derby) who bore the title 'King of Man'. The eagle and baby (Oskatel Lathum) was taken from the Lathum coat of arms, when one of the first Earls of Derby married Isabelle Lathum. The motto on the reverse is translated 'whichever way you throw me, I will stand'.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1733 James Stanley 1 Penny coin from the Isle of Man is that it features a unique design element - a small sailing ship, known as a "manx" ship, on the reverse side of the coin. This design was specifically added to the coin to represent the island's maritime history and its importance in the British Crown dependencies.
