Comment
House of Plantagenet (1154-1399), Henry III (1216-72), Short Cross coinage (1216-47), Class 7b, struck c. 1222-29.The Short Cross coinage continued during Henry's reign for a further 30 years during which time the style of portraiture and workmanship deteriorated. By the 1220s minting had concentrated at London and Canterbury, one exception being the mint of the Abbot of Bury St Edmunds.
Interesting fact
The Henry III Short Cross penny was minted during a time of great change in England. It was issued during the reign of Henry III, who ruled from 1216 to 1247, and it features a unique design that sets it apart from other coins of the time. The coin's obverse (front) features a crowned bust of Henry III, while the reverse (back) shows a short cross with three pelicans, symbolizing the three aspects of the Trinity. This design was meant to promote the idea of the king's divine right to rule and his connection to the Christian faith. Despite its age, many of these coins have survived to the present day and are highly prized by collectors.
