One interesting fact about the 1937-1946 George VI Maundy Penny is that it was minted during a time of great change and turmoil in the United Kingdom. King George VI ascended to the throne in 1936 after his older brother, Edward VIII, abdicated to marry an American divorcee. This coin was minted during the early years of World War II, when the UK was fighting for its survival against Nazi Germany and its allies. Despite the challenges of wartime, the Royal Mint continued to produce coins, including this silver penny, which was used in circulation and also given as a gift to the Royal Maundy recipients.
