Between 1919 and 1921 a series of experiments were undertaken for a square coinage in nickel to replace the large bronze penny and halfpenny coins.
Interesting fact
The Kookaburra Pattern 1 Penny coin from Australia features a unique design of a kookaburra bird perched on a tree branch, which was created by artist Stuart Devlin. It's interesting to note that this design was originally intended to be used on the Australian penny coin, but it was ultimately rejected in favor of a more traditional design featuring King George V. Despite this, the Kookaburra Pattern coins have become highly sought after by collectors and are considered a rare and valuable piece of Australian numismatic history.
