These ruins date back to the Wanka civilization, which predated the Incas and occupied the Mantaro valley.This city comprised some 4,300 chullpas, small circular buildings organized in groups around central courtyards and protected by walls. It was divided into two districts separated by a central avenue, and boasted a complex hydraulic system capable of providing drinking water for the entire population, estimated at 20,000. It was populated between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries AD.
