Vilcashuamán was one of the most important Inca provincial centers outside Cusco, in what is now the Ayacucho region. The Temple of the Sun is one of the best-preserved Inca buildings. In addition, a Catholic church was built here in colonial times. It is thought that some of its walls were covered with precious metals and that the gods of the empire were worshipped here. The temple's main enclosure lies beneath the San Juan Bautista church. It has a series of terraces, which housed the ceremonial gardens. It faces the main square, where a sacred pyramid and a series of palaces were also installed.
Interesting fact
