This iron square coin is casted at Ishinomaki, Mutsu province between the 4th and 7th years of Tenmei. 308,000 strings of this coin were issued. The coin was so bad that, if they were carried in a bag for one day it would be torn, and out of a hundred, two or three would be broken. The use of this coin was strictly prohibited outsideof the province. Copper specimens will probably be mother coins for casting the iron coins, or fantasies. The early issue were larger and being smaller along the time. It is separated into 3 types: large (~23mm), medium (~22mm), and small (~20mm). See Bosen pages for difference in caligraphy.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Sendai-tsūhō coin is that it was minted during a time of economic reform in Japan, known as the "Tenmei reform" (1784-1787), which aimed to stabilize the currency and promote trade. The Sendai Domain, where the coin was minted, was one of the most powerful feudal domains in Japan at the time, and the coin was likely used for local trade and commerce. Despite being made of iron, which was a common material for coins at the time, the Sendai-tsūhō coin was still considered a valuable and reliable form of currency, reflecting the economic importance of the Sendai Domain.
