Comment
- Copper patterns dated 1828 and bearing the reverse designs of (i) a Lion and Palm, or (ii) the normal 46 san Surat rupee reverse, were prepared at the Bombay mint apparently as suggested designs for a new style gold muhr or silver rupee. The obverses for both coins were a star and garter design with the date in the center.- Weight varies 8.2 - 8.4 grams
Interesting fact
The Pattern 1 Mohur coin from Bombay Presidency (British India) made of Copper weighing 8.3g has an interesting fact that it was minted during a brief period of experimentation with copper coinage in India. The coin was part of a series of pattern coins minted in 1828, which were designed to test the feasibility of using copper as a substitute for silver in the production of rupees. Although the experiment was ultimately unsuccessful, the Pattern 1 Mohur coin remains a unique and fascinating piece of numismatic history.
