Comment

The coin's reverse depicts a famous event of the Maccabean Revolt, during the Battle of Beth Zechariah in May of 162 BC. When the Jewish rebels were intimidated by the war elephants of the Seleucid army, Eleazar Avaran (also known as Eleazar Horan), brother of Judas Maccabeus, charged the elephant believed to be carrying the Seleucid ruler Antiochus V and stabbed it from below. The mortally wounded elephant collapsed, killing Eleazar. Although the Maccabees would lose the battle, Eleazar's sacrifice and bravery became an iconic event of the Maccabean war, and was a popular subject in Jewish and Christian religious art throughout the medieval and modern eras.

Interesting fact

The interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted to commemorate the holiday of Hanukkah and features an image of a Maccabean hero, symbolizing the Jewish people's fight for religious freedom.
