In 1990, the Soviet Union was collapsing, and three of its republics, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (which had been annexed during World War II) were all fighting to gain their independence. As part of this national agitation, copies of this 1-kroon coin were privately re-struck with the new date "1990".
