Comment
The Grand Duchy of Hesse and the Rhine (German: Großherzogtum Hessen und bei Rhein) or, between 1806 and 1816, the Grand Duchy of Hesse (German: Großherzogtum Hessen), was a continuation of the County of Hesse-Darmstadt. The prince regent came from the House of Hesse and led the expansion of his kingdom to the left bank of the river Rhine after the ex-Palatinate of the Rhine. The official title was Grand Duke of Hesse and the Rhine. After the annexation of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Kassel by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866, it remained the last independent state of Hesse and is therefore considered one of the predecessors of the federal states.
The nation's capital was Darmstadt, other important cities were Mainz, Offenbach, Worms and Gießen.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Kreuzer coin from Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt is that it was minted during a time of great economic and political change in Germany. The coin was introduced in 1848, the same year that the German Revolution began, which aimed to create a unified German state. The coin's mintage was also a result of the Hesse-Darmstadt government's attempt to reform its currency and economy. Despite the challenges of the time, the coin remained in circulation until 1856, when it was replaced by the Prussian Vereinsthaler. This coin's history reflects the complex political and economic landscape of 19th-century Germany.
