Silver 1487 (.222) Silver 1488 (.167)By a decree of 20 April, 1487, Maximilian tried to establish a new currency system in the Burgundian Netherlands based on the gold real (14.4 g. pure gold) and the silver real (7.0 grams 0.900 fine), with the equivalents 1 gold real = 24 silver reals; 1 silver real = 4 griffons (1.75 g., 0.88 fine) = 24 groats (1.24 g., 0.200 fine). By the time the first Brabant coins were struck in July, 1487, the values had changed to 1 silver real (7.2 g.) = 4 griffons (3.35 g. , 0.480 fine)= 16 groats (1.81 g., 0.214).
Some of these types (like this one) stated the denomination in the legend, which was rare at the time.
These types were produced for less than two years, and were replaced by types resembling earlier issues (groats and their fractions, patards, briquets, etc.).
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Grossus coin featuring Philip the Handsome is that it was minted during a time of great economic and political change in the Duchy of Brabant. The coin was issued during the reign of Philip the Handsome, who was the Duke of Brabant from 1487 to 1488. During his reign, Philip implemented a number of economic reforms, including the introduction of a new coinage system, which helped to stabilize the economy and promote trade in the region. The 1 Grossus coin was a key part of this new system, and it remains a valuable and sought-after collector's item to this day.
