Comment

House of Tudor (1485-1603), Mary (1553-54), sterling silver groat.

One of only three silver denominations issued during her brief solo reign, the others being the halfgroat and penny.

Interesting fact

The 1 Groat coin was used during the reign of Mary I (also known as Mary Tudor or Bloody Mary) and was the first coin to feature her portrait. It was minted in 1553 and 1554, and it's made of silver (.925) with a weight of 2 grams. The coin's design features Mary's bust on the obverse side, surrounded by the inscription "MARIA DEI GRATIA ANGLIAE FRANCIAE ET HIBERNIAE REGINA" (Mary, by the grace of God, Queen of England, France, and Ireland). The reverse side features a cross with three pelicans, symbolizing the three aspects of the Holy Trinity. This coin is considered a rare and valuable collector's item, especially in good condition.
