Comment
In the aftermath of the insurrections against Maximilian I in the Low Countries in the late 1480s, Albert, Duke of Saxony was installed as governor of the Netherlands in 1488 and chose Franeker for his residence until 1493, so this type was struck during his tenure. The lion between Saint John's legs obverse suggests the mint was Leeuwarden.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Goldgulden coin from the Holy Roman Empire is that it features an image of Emperor Frederick III on one side and the imperial eagle on the other. This coin was minted during a time of great change and upheaval in Europe, with the rise of nation-states and the decline of the feudal system. Despite these challenges, the Holy Roman Empire continued to issue coins like the 1 Goldgulden, which remained an important symbol of wealth and power.
