Interesting fact
The Pattern 1 Ghirsh / Piastre coin was designed by the artist and sculptor, Anton Scharff, who was commissioned by the Syrian government to create a new currency for the country during World War II. Scharff's design features a stylized portrait of a Syrian woman on the obverse side of the coin, and a pattern of stars and crescents on the reverse side. The coin was never officially issued, however, due to the political instability and conflict in Syria during the war. As a result, only a small number of pattern coins were produced, making them highly sought after by collectors today.
