The coin's obverse (front) side features a portrait of Charles de Gaulle, the former President of France, while the reverse (back) side features the iconic French motto "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) surrounded by a wreath of olive branches. This design was created by the French sculptor and engraver, Auguste-Léon Pétel.
